Happy National Hat Day!!!!
Yeah that’s a thing…
National Hat Day is celebrated on January 15th in the US. It’s a thing and no one really knows where it came from. It’s probably the easiest holiday to celebrate, all you have to do is wear a hat and post it to your social media account using the hashtag #NationalHatDay. I can see it being pretty fun, it’s an excuse to post more selfies on Instagram and connect with others by following the hashtag… business gold. 🙂 I thought I’d share a few fun facts about hats that I found on National Day Calendar.
In the Middle Ages, hats were an indicator of social status.Structured hats for women began to be worn in the late 16th century.

In the 1920s women ditched bonnets and wide brimmed hats for smaller hats that hugged the head

Big Head Hat Struggles
Hello. My name is Erica and I have a BIG Head. How’s the saying go… You always want what you can’t have. I LOVE hats and I would wear one everyday if it weren’t for my abnormally large head. I have glared at women jealously who wear those big floppy hats that are so darn cute because honey… I have yet to find one that fits my big ass head. SIGH… On top of having a large head I also am the proud owner of very thick naturally curly hair that is almost impossible to contain in a hat. While I love my hair I sometimes wish I had shorter hair so that I could have more accessory options… but yeah I am kind of attached to it.
Big Head Hat Shopping Tips
Honey, if you have a big head just accept that fact that you probably won’t be able to buy many fashion hats at big box stores and most national chains in the mall. It’s just not going to happen for you sis, let’s get over that and move on. Let’s talk about some of my big head hat shopping tips, just a few things I have learned the hard way.
Plus Size Stores Are Your Friend.
Plus size stores tend to carry accessories such as hats and boots in larger width sizes so chances are you are going to be able to fit the hats there. Even if you are not considered plus size body wise just pop in and check them out. One of my personal Favorites is AshleyStewart. They Have the BEST sales – right now you can get 35% Off Full-Price Plus Size Purchase + Free-Shipping on Orders of $125+ Use code: WINTERSAVE35. Valid 1/1 – 1/31.
Don’t Shop Online
Well… shopping online at plus size stores is OK, but if you are shopping at a big box store or your favorite national chain is sort of a roll of the dice. Unfortunately I have crapped out more times than I can count. I found it is much safe for me to go into a store and try them on. Save me the aggravation of it not fitting properly or at all and having to return it.
It’s Not You… it’s them
See the problem doesn’t lie in your head size it lies in stores mass producing hats to fit a certain head size and are not inclusive of other sizes. This is an ongoing problem in the fashion and beauty industry. Makeup companies are getting better at being inclusive of all skin shades, however the fashion industry is still hit or miss. Many stores have jumped on the plus size band wagon, but many haven’t, they also don’t always take into consideration that some of us have larger calves, bigger heads etc. Don’t sweat it or feel disappointed. We are still fighting this Body Type Inclusion battle so hopefully they’ll start listening to us soon.
